Proofs Of Supplication From Quran

Almighty Allah (SWT) asks people to be persistent in their supplication and never to lose hope in beseeching Him and Him alone. Who else except Allah (SWT) would respond to our supplication and du'a? He himself said: “When my servants ask thee (O Mohammad) concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them); I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me; let them also, with a will, listen to My call and believe in Me; that they may walk in the right way.”(2:186). Allah also said:“ Call on your Lord with humility and in private: for Allah loveth not those who trespass beyond bounds.” (7:55).

Supplication is of two kinds. One is worship and the other is a request. Allah (SWT) commands to be invoked with humility (which is insisting in request and continuous in worship) and secretly (not loud) to avoid "Ryea" (show off). Allah (SWT) also said: “And your Lord said: Invoke Me[i.e. believe in My Oneness] (and ask Me for anything) I will respond to your(invocation). But those who are too arrogant to serve Me [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not believe in My Oneness] will surely enter hell in humiliation!”(40:60). Allah (SWT) hence has promised to respond to our invocations but for those who do not invoke Him, He has promised punishment because invocation of Allah (SWT) is an act of worship and refusing to invoke Him (disbelieving in Him or refuse to invoke Him due to insolence and pride) is refusal to worship Him.

Conditions of Supplication

One must know and believe that only Allah (SWT) can answer his supplication and He is the only one Who can bring good to him. Allah (SWT)  said: “Or who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him and who relieves its suffering and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Little it is that ye heed!”(27:62)

One must invoke Allah (SWT) alone and no others. Allah (SWT) said: “And the places of worship are for Allah (alone): so invoke not anyone along with Allah.”(72:18).

One must be patient.

One must think positively of Allah (SWT), must have faith in Him and believe that He has the ability to do anything He wants. Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said:“ Supplicate Allah with confidence, He will answer you.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi].

Why Many of Our Supplications are not Answered

Ibrahim Ibn Adham (May Allah (SWT) have mercy on him) was a third century scholar and a reputed teacher. Some people came to him and referred this ayat of Sura Ghaffir of the Holy Quran “ And your Lord Says: Call on Me, I will answer your call” (40:60) and then asked why their supplications or prayers are not answered. In reply Ibrahim Ibn Adham (May Allah (SWT) have mercy on him) said:

You know Allah, yet you do not obey Him.

You recite the Quran, yet you do not act according to it.

You know shaitan, yet you have agreed with him.

You say that you love the Prophet of Allah, Mohammad (Peace be upon him), yet you abandon his sunnah.

You say you love paradise, yet you do not act to gain on it.

You say that you fear the fire of hell, yet you do not prevent yourselves from it.

You say ‘Indeed death is true’, yet you have not prepared for it.

You find faults with others, yet you do not look at your faults.

You eat of that which Allah has provided for you, yet you are not grateful to Him.

You bury your dead, yet you do not take lesson from it.

Dear muslim brothers and sisters, Allah (SWT) said that if you try to count the favors that He blessed you with, you would never be able to number them. He gave us everything, without measures and boundaries for our sustenance. We have done nothing to deserve the things He bestowed on us. His mercies encompass all of us, believers and unbelievers alike. He is the one that gives, His is the dominion on the heavens and earth and to Him we shall all return. He knows the secret of all our hearts however we may try to hide it. We are His servants, sent to accomplish His will. Let us all, with piety and fear in our hearts, plead to our Creator for His mercy and for His forgiveness. Let us all with humility and humbleness ask for His blessing so that we are guided to a way that is straight, so that our questioning on the day of judgement is made easy and so that we are saved from the fierce heat of the blazing fire on the day where there will be no one to protect but He, no one to help but He. Let us ask for the light of His face so that He accepts us among those of the company of our Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him). He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, but let us not forget that He is also the Swiftest in taking account.

May Allah (SWT) bless us all and accept our prayers. Ameen.
